Until a few years ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a former comedian and television personality, was best known in his native country for playing the role of Vasyl Holoborodko, an everyman school teacher turned crusading anti-corruption President. This background, as has been noted by innumerable commentators, seems unlikely for a wartime leader. And yet, as the artist Barry Blitt captures on the magazine’s latest cover, Zelensky’s courageous conduct in the face of the Russian invasion has made him the hero of the moment for many people. We recently asked Blitt about his connection to Ukraine and its President.
